Unquestioning

I am jealous
Sometimes —
Not jealous, but quietly envious
Perhaps appreciative
Amazed, even intrigued

By people —
Who can sit or stand
In cafes, outside workplaces
Inside —
Or on the phone —

And talk —
Just talk — for five or ten minutes
For half an hour or a few hours
Day after day —
With the same or different people

Just talk —
Speak —
And appear unconcerned
About what they are saying
Why, and to whom —
About what their words

And words —
Are really saying
Affirming, denying, or concluding

I do not know
And have never known
Can never know
How people
Can just talk

Standing or sitting
Inside or outside
With another

But truly —
I do not know many other things
Have never known and can never know
How people —
Can go for a run
Or cycle — everyday
How they can go to hairdressers
Regularly —
How they can be so consistent
Do the same job, the same work —
For five, ten, twenty
Or forty years

How they can be so —
Unquestioning, quietly and secretly
Human
Everyday —
For their entire lives
