Be Yourself

Let me explain to you my love

Spare a moment
Lend an ear
Give an hour — a night
Or a day

And let me explain to you
Why we had to lose one another —
Why, mercilessly, we sundered

You may have reckoned the fault and failure
Entirely mine
Or yours as well
Or of those others whose names you knew —
And those whose names you did not know

You may have reckoned this loss
Took something from you
But have you not also reckoned
That losing me freed you —
From having to be, and do
Anything for me

If so
Then take this freedom
As the gift of sundering

Be yourself
And never again —
Be anything
For me
