Two-gatherness

We try for lifetimes
To feel, to touch —
Hold tight, draw close
To experience togetherness —
To be as one

To recapture a fading
Split-second —
A feeling, a knowing
Of being one

Having lost it
We turn away — let go —
And return
To grapple, merge, forget
Being apart
Trying to resurrect
A time we cannot recall

Failing again —
Night after night
Year after year —
We drift
Still trying

Here and there
Futilely whiffing —
Grasping at the one
By means of two
