The Dreaming-I

There was a person I was speaking to
About something — or nothing
In a dream I had
And then I woke up

Now, I sit here
Wondering what I should do
With this day ahead
And what will move
Whatever is done — through me

And then I remember
That person —
And wonder if he, too, wondered
What it was that drove
His speech, behaviour and actions
While he was listening to me

And I remember
That never have I — in a dream —
Encountered someone
Aware — of their own mind —
All my dreams
Have only ever unfolded through
A dreaming-I

And were he to say to me
That he wondered what drove
His appearance, speech and actions
While he was listening to
A dreaming-I
In a dream I had

What could I have said
Would we not both —
At that instant — be in the same state
As if awake
Aware — of our minds —

And now —
As this awake-I
Aware of its mind —
Sits and wonders — about the day ahead
And what will drive
What is done — through it

Are these wonderings —
Any different — from the wonderings
Of that person
Had he been wondering
In my dream

Just as, without the dreaming-I
He could not appear — unaware of being —
In my dream
So too, without the awake-I
I — this person — could not appear
Nor could any other persons, nor their worlds
Each assuming
Itself awake
Aware of its mind

Each wondering —
About whatever is driving
Its appearances, speech, and actions

Like an impossible dream
