Sitting In Silence

Shall I sit
In silence

Very well then —
I shall sit in silence

Here, I am sitting
In silence

Just as I have been
Sitting in silence
All my life

Just as silence
Has been sitting —
Even before I start sitting
In it

And just as silence
Will keep sitting
Even after
I have stopped sitting
In it

What — and who — sits in silence
When silence is that which sits

What nonsense, then
To ask someone
Already sitting
To sit in silence —
Which is already sitting

How can sitting sit
In sitting

How can sitting
Ever leave sitting

Do I stop sitting
In silence
If I stand

Does silence stop sitting
If I stand up —
And slips out
From underneath me

Do I leave it here —
On the sofa
And walk out of it
When I leave the room

Is it not
Already sitting with me —
In it

How can I not sit
In silence
Even when I’m not sitting

How can silence not sit —
When all it is
Is sitting
