Playthings

All that I ever sought
Was an object
All that I ever worked for
Was an object
All that I ever cried over
Longed for —
Was an object

When I obtained the objects
I found
That I was still looking

I thought I would find more objects
That would sate the hunger
Of seeking, looking —
Objects like meaning, purpose
Truth, enlightenment
Books, titles
Acknowledgements, goodwill of people
Bounties of luck

But no —
Nothing satisfied
I was left alone

Thank God —
So that the real object
Of all my desires
Could reveal itself to me
As me

Now I seek only objects —
Nothing more or less
For I know that what I am
Takes pleasure
In playing with its own objects

I never seek myself
Nor seek to enhance myself
Through any of the objects
